Themes and colors can impact the way a website is ranked on search engines. Learn how to make your website stand out from the crowd by using color theory in your design.

The does changing website design affect seo is a question that has been asked before. There are no concrete answers, but it does seem to be true that the change in design could impact your SEO ranking.

Google has released a brief video that addresses the question of whether the theme of a website impacts SEO. Yes, a website theme will impact SEO, according to John Mueller, the video presenter, and he explained how this might happen.

According to Mueller,

“It’s all too easy to dismiss website themes as little more than a splash of color on top of a completed framework. But there’s a lot more to it.”

Many content components that are important to SEO will be affected by the theme:

  • Headings
  • Text
  • Images
  • How are pages connected together?
  • Time it takes for a page to load
  • Data that is organized

Good themes, according to Google, make it simpler for search engines to comprehend the information, and Mueller confirmed that altering a website’s theme would impact its SEO in general.

Try out some new website themes.

Testing out a website theme before selecting one, according to John Mueller, is a smart idea.

Recommendations

  • Experiment with several themes on a test website.
  • Content from the previous website should be included.
  • Block indexing of a test website so Google doesn’t crawl it by mistake.
  • Examine the HTML produced by the theme.

Search Community Suggestions

I questioned a few SEO and web design professionals whether they believed a website’s theme had an impact on SEO.

Humphrey, Adam J.

Makin 8 Inc’s search marketing specialist Adam J. Humphrey (LinkedIn profile) offered his thoughts on how themes affect SEO:

“Indeed, the way websites render has an effect on how they resolve for search engines.

As a consequence of modifications to their themes, I observed a 26% rise in total views and their greatest year on record for a big boat group.

Themes are very important, and if you’re using WordPress, you should utilize Gutenberg-based editors (also known as Gutenberg blocks builders) since they’re the cleanest type of editor that uses the WordPress core and will result in a tremendously fast page speed.

Even if Google’s Core Web Vitals were not a ranking criteria, I would prioritize it as I have for years simply because of how well people react to speedy websites. We’re talking about more clicks, calls, and sales conversions in general. The favorable reaction seems to be the same whether it’s a global site or a small local company.

This is why I prefer Gutenberg Blocks editors since they utilize the WordPress engine, which means they load significantly quicker.

This year, my only two theme suggestions are Oxygen and Bricks Builder for anyone willing to put in the effort to learn them.

Otherwise, simply utilize the WordPress editor since anything else won’t get you a perfect score on mobile in this mobile-first environment.

Alternative themes use an excessive amount of scripts, resulting in lower ratings.

Less moving components equals less friction, which is also true when it comes to selecting an SEO theme.”

The choice of a theme was crucial, according to Chris Labbate (LinkedIn profile), Director of Marketing at SEOBank.ca:

“Changes to your WordPress theme may have a big impact on SEO results if you make a bad decision.

One of the reasons is that your theme has an effect on your design (CSS and JavaScript), which may slow down your site.”

Alex Alexakis is a Greek actor.

The creator of PixelChefs Web Design & SEO, Alex Alexakis (LinkedIn profile), shared his thoughts on the significance of themes in SEO:

“Changing a website’s theme may have an impact on its performance since the design, page structure, internal connections, and even architecture change.

Themes, for example, may have a detrimental impact on the speed of your website by:

  • requires the need of several plugins in order to operate “correctly”
  • external resources are loaded in excess (scripts, webfonts)
  • extra internal resources are loaded (scripts, webfonts)
  • coding errors
  • CSS that hasn’t been optimized
  • javascript / jquery that isn’t optimized

Site architecture is a major problem, particularly in site rebuilds, since some themes use custom-built custom post types that impose a URL structure that may not fit the current architecture.”

Carefully choose a theme for your website.

Many themes claim to be search engine friendly. However, this isn’t always the case. In Google’s PageSpeed insights tool, several themes get poor performance ratings. Even the demo sites for some of the “SEO friendly” themes aren’t performing well.

An “SEO Friendly” Theme’s Page Speed Score

For a theme that claims to be SEO friendly, this is an actual PageSpeed Insights score of 35 out of 100.

Gutenberg Block Editor, as mentioned by Adam J. Humphrey, is a feasible choice for creating a fast-loading website. Building a site directly using the WordPress Gutenberg site builder is quicker since the site is created directly from the core and does not need any extra layers. WordPress has been gradually refining the Gutenberg code to ensure that just the files required to create a web page are loaded.

It’s critical to recognize that Gutenberg isn’t yet complete. It is being developed in four stages, with WordPress now in the second phase, which focuses on bringing full site editing to Gutenberg.

Gutenberg’s Development in Four Stages

  1. Easier Editing – WordPress already has this feature, and it’s becoming better.
  2. Full site editing, block patterns, block directory, and block-based themes are all available for customization.
  3. Collaboration – An easier method to collaborate on material.
  4. Multilingual — This is the foundational implementation for multilingual sites.

Always put up a test site for staging your new WordPress theme, as recommended by John Mueller, where you may customize the site to be precisely as you want it to be.

WP Stagecoach, a service I’ve used, makes the procedure simple.
